Time marches on. Levi, I think it was the Stan you were on about. If it was he was in C Sqn Assault troop for a long long time. I certainly remember on exercise with him, i think he was the one who introduced me to "batman washes" i.e. wrap a towel around your kneck and wash everything above it. I,ve got some photo's somewhere i'll have to dig them out. Stan and his moustache will long be remembered.

"Stan Lewis"
Many years ago I remember giving Stan a lift home from Bovy to Bootle when I was on a D&M course during Stans time as a Schools Instructor. Nothing unusual about that other than Stan was on the back of my Honda 400 Super Sports (a real mans bike Levi).
Again nothing unusual until we were pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the M6 by the bizzies. Stan was asked by a rather surprised looking copper as to why his crash helmet (early type tank "Bome Dome") did not have a chinstrap in place to prevent it slipping off, should we be unfortunate enough to have an accident. Stan (also dressed in a green issue tank suit and DMS!!) then proceeded to baffle the copper with pure science as to the adhesive qualities of the "Bome Dome" and in particular how the velcro straps and ear pieces would prevent this. I listened in awe during Stans 10 minute TP. Having convinced the copper that Stan knew what he was talking about we were allowed to continue our journey to Bootle.
For many years after Stan and I would reminice about that particular trip, which always had us both in fits of laughter.
I will always remember him, his moustache and the permanent big grin on his face. Rest in peace Stan, a true gent and a laugh a minute!!

It is a quotation from the venerable music hall entertainer Arthur Atkinson as featured on the popular Televisual entertainment - "The Fast Show". I am thinking of changing it to the more relevant and topical "Now watch this drive!"

Stan was my driving instructor on Scorpion in Herford. We were going out towards Bad Oynhausen one morning driver training, there were these road works, Stan told me to speed up and head for the German roadworkers, so I did, man these blokes ran for their lives, I just thought it was part of my driver training. We were stopped by the RMP a few minutes later to explain the chasing of the Krauts. I don't know what was said but Stan just came back with that same old smile on his face, the one he always had and we continued on our way. Funny!!
Stan would never get stressed, calm in moments of panic.

We were on exersize Stood down for the weekend so I wandered over to visit Stan who was driveing the SQMS (Jeff Gollye). I found them scoffing an amazeing curry which Stan had just knocked out.
Jeff commented that it was an good curry but would be better if it had a bit of fruit in it. Stan said he was an ungreatfull sod, reached into his trailer an threw a banana onto Jeffs plate.

When Stan was Tp Sgt of surveillance troop we were on exercise and he decided we needed some fresh veg. Off we go into the fields at midnight to pick spuds and corn. Half way through the farmer turns up on his tractor and the civvy equivalent of Chieftain white light. Two stunned squaddies like startled rabbits in a torch, legging it across the fields spuds flying everywhere. By the time we lost the farmer we didnt have a lot left.
I know how to cook corn says Stan, 1 hour later its still boiling away and weve topped the BV up twice, still rock hard; it was only pig corn. Apparently pigs dont like soft corn.

Stan made friends easily and was not just a friend to people but would always be there to help and give advise at the right time. When I transfered to to the regiment in 71 Stan arrived at the some time having reenlisted and we were both posted to C Sqn and it was Stan who helped me settle in. We stayed together in C Sqn and for a while in the same troop along with Eddy Atkinson, who I know will miss him, and Marty Murray. The three of them never stopped laughing throughout Omagh training, great fun. Stan and I were neigbours in Omagh and again in Herford and I can still hear that great laugh from the flat above me.
One funny story took place in Bovington when Stan was posted to the D&M school. He had a great mate in Dave Winstanly (14/20) not withstanding Dave was a scouse still 14/20th. Anyway Stan managed to get himself an allotment that included some chickens and Stan being Stan told everyone how he would benefit from fresh veg and eggs. Well the micky taking went on for weeks and Stan insisted that he would have the last laugh. The chickens did nothing for week and weeks so Dave one Sunday managed to get Stans keys and placed two hard boiled eggs that he mucked up a bit into the chicken coup. Monday morning Stan visited the allotment and proudly recoved two eggs. He couldn't wait to get to the school that morning not knowing that Dave had just about told everyone.Stan was now full of himself and said he would have then fried on toast for his lunch. I sure you can imagine his return to the school after lunch.
Thoughts are now with Mo, Kevin, Kelly and Jamie. God bless Stan.

When I joined the 1st in Hohne 1961 late, as we had been sent to Munster by troop train after our fun-filled "voyage" on the troopship from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, -( but the Regiment had moved to Hohne and no-one knew that at Catterick) I was put into A Squadron. Stan was there in my barrack room. He was at the time driver to the OC "Larry" Parks. We became good friends. After 2 years or so, I went to Recce Troop and we saw less of each other. In 1967 I went to the Army Air Corps as an "ERE" pilot, and after my first tour re-badged to the AAC.
I was only to see Stan "the man" on one occasion some years after that. I think he was the COs driver at the time, sporting his (new to me) moustache and was a Lance Corporal. I was then a SSgt, and surprised that he didn't have a higher rank, but I don't think that Stan was very ambitious. Anyway, I had the pleasure of giving him a flight in the Gazelle and he was able to take the controls for a while - which pleased him.
Farewell, old friend.
