Mick "Zoony" Staff. He was in 2 troop A Sqn at the start of the Herford tour. Transferred to RAMC and died later of a heart attack at the end of a BFT. Jacko Dickson and Mally Tobin went to his wedding. He and his wife Shirley were often to be seen in 'Charlies Bar' on Mindener Strasse on a Fri night. She and their child came back to visit friends (stayed with Roy Palmer) while we were in Bovington. She had bought a house in Camberley, Surrey with the life insurance money. A wealthy widow?, not seen or heard anything of her since Bovvy.

Zoony gained his nickname because his face was the spitting image of the monkey of that name in the childrens puppet programme " Fireball XL5".

Tiny,
a really good lad was Zoony, I think he was another that started with 'A' Sqn. Asslt. Tp. Yes he did get his name because of Fireball XL5.

Zooney was a truley nice guy, I recall an incident at Herford when, along with a few other unfortunates, from A SQN we had been volunteered to join B&C,Iin the Op Banner tour of 77,and during training we were out on a run poor old Zooney collapsed and looked in a bad way,
I have often wondered if that had any bearing on what happened to him later in his life,as is usual for the Army,a few days later he was back on his feet, and if memory serves he completed the training and did the tour.

Bob,
it probably was the start or a warning of things to come for Zooney, but everyone just recovered from things then and got on with it,you were more worried about being laughed at for being a wimp, than anything that could happen medically to you.

Hi Mick,
Just as well we can still keep our memories at least they cant take them away,as Tiny said about Geoff being similar age, when you look at the list of our dear departed,it tends to concentrate the mind, and as I was 49 yesterday I am in a very reflective mood today

Honk Honk jones - the pig is live and well!!

Only thing you should be reflecting on is that the next birthday you will be 50!!!!!!!!

Yes mate there are a few of "the lads" who have not and will not be celebraing birthdays again.

Ginge Taylor - Geordie Parks - Graham Eaves - Snowy Evans to name a few that are not already mentioned here.
